If you’ve read our blog, you know how important we think Search Term Isolation is. Today we’re happy to announce a new advanced feature that will help Prestozon users achieve extremely high quality search term isolation with ease: exact match coverage checks.
When processing your keyword rules, Prestozon now does two checks when creating a suggestion for a keyword:
- For a new keyword rule that would create an exact match keyword, Prestozon checks if that search term is already covered by an existing exact match keyword in that ad group. If it’s already covered, the rule will not create the new exact match keyword.
- For a negative rule that creates a negative exact keyword, Prestozon checks if that negative keyword would negate other search terms that have had a sale. If so, the rule will not create that negative keyword.
Let’s dive into the details to understand why this is so important.
How does Amazon treat exact match?
“Exact” is a bit misleading when it comes to the exact match type. Amazon will match close variations where the customer search intent seems to be the same. The most commonly known variations are plurals. If we have an exact match keyword “mens cape”, Amazon will also match against the search terms “men cape” and “mens capes”. What’s not as commonly known is that they will match against “mans cape”, “men’s cape”, and “man cape’s”. Customers search on strange things sometimes so we even see “for men capes”, “a mans cape”, “men+cape”, etc.
The most we’ve seen is nearly 200 unique search terms for one exact match keyword!
At first blush this doesn’t seem like a big deal. It is clear that the customer is looking for the same thing so you’re happy to show up for all of those without the hard work of figuring out each of the precise text strings on your own. But if you are familiar with how important search term isolation then is you’ll understand how this can be a huge problem. (If you’re not, we recommend checking out our blog post here)
Let’s take an example where you have one ad group with two exact match keywords: “mens cape” and “mens capes”. For simplicity, let’s assume that these keywords aren’t anywhere else in the account. If you’re bidding $1.00 for “mens cape” and $0.95 for “mens capes” then “mens cape” is probably going to get all of the impressions.
But then one day you realize that this first keyword isn’t performing well, so you decide to lower the bid to $0.50. Now Amazon will enter the other keyword, “mens capes”, into all of the auctions for the same search terms! So instead of reducing your bid from $1.00 to $0.50, you essentially only reduced your bid from $1.00 to $0.95.
It may take you a while to notice that “mens capes” is now getting all of the impressions for these search terms. Once you’ve gathered enough data to realize this, you’ll come to the same conclusion that the bid should be reduced to $0.50. That’s wasted money, because you already knew that!
Prestozon’s new coverage checks prevent this from happening as new exact match keywords won’t be created if the term is already covered by an existing one.
What About Negatives?
Ok, so we’ve established that it is critical to make sure you have minimum (or zero) overlap between keywords for the search terms you want to control performance over. It’s also important to understand how Amazon treats exact matches from a negative perspective.
You have “mens cape” set up as an exact match keyword in an ad group and there are no other keywords in this ad group. You’ve bought 100 clicks for the search term “mens cape” which has resulted in $500 in sales and 100 clicks for “mens capes” which has resulted in no sales. So you think “I’m wasting so much money on the search term “mens capes”, I’ll negative it!” But as soon as you do, Amazon will also stop showing you for “mens cape” and you’ll stop receiving those sales!
The new negative exact coverage check goes through your search term performance and checks to make sure Amazon won’t kill exposure to another search term that is converting.
Dealing with Exact Match Overlap
Coverage checks in Prestozon’s keyword rules handle this whole problem. It’s tricky to do on your own because Amazon doesn’t provide explicit rules for what is treated as the same, so you’re required to use your search term report to understand what Amazon treats as equivalent.
